The energy objectives
In 2024 the Enlarged Directorate approved environmental objectives to 2030, committing CERN to limit electricity consumption to 1.5 TWh/year during LHC Run 4. With ISO 50001 certification and a decade of measures that already cut consumption by ~10%, the ceiling turns “more computing” into a trade-off rather than a given — the constraint under which HL-LHC computing models must be designed.
