CERN Open Hardware Licence v2

The text of the CERN Open Hardware Licence version 2 (permissive variant), published on the Open Hardware Repository.

What it anchors

  • CERN developed the licence to support the freedom to use, study, modify, share and distribute hardware designs.
  • Version 2 (March 2020) splits into three variants: CERN-OHL-P (permissive), CERN-OHL-W (weakly reciprocal) and CERN-OHL-S (strongly reciprocal); absent an explicit choice, covered source is treated as CERN-OHL-S.
  • Its scope was broadened beyond electronics to mechanical and artistic designs, ASICs, FPGAs and even software.
