The Linux service
The operating system under the batch farm, lxplus and most of the data centre. CC7 reached end of life on 30 June 2024, and CERN rebuilds Red Hat’s Extended Lifecycle Support internally — by special agreement with the Accelerator and Technology Sector — until 1 January 2027, because accelerator systems cannot be rebuilt on somebody else’s schedule. The strategic move: CERN and Fermilab jointly adopted AlmaLinux as the standard distribution for experiments at both laboratories, which turns a distribution choice into an inter-laboratory agreement.
