MALT — Microsoft Alternatives
After twenty years on discounted academic rates, Microsoft revoked CERN’s academic status and licensing costs rose more than tenfold. MALT was the answer, and its principles of engagement are the doctrine behind much of the current architecture: deliver the same service to every category of personnel, avoid vendor lock-in to reduce risk and dependency, keep hands on the data, and address the common use cases. Keycloak entered CERN through this door.
