CERNphone

The telephony service: a dedicated SIP backend with provisioning interfaces and two clients — CERNphone mobile, built on the open-source Linphone stack and customised for CERN, and CERNphone desktop, developed in-house for Windows, macOS and Linux. It retired both Skype for Business (2013–2021) and the Alcatel IP phones (2006–2014), with the ageing Alcatel exchange handed over progressively to CERN’s own TONE system. The clients are developed in the open on GitHub.

It is the malt logic applied to the phone system: rather than replacing one vendor with another, build on open protocols and keep the backend at home.
